Among the many legumes peas are one of the healthiest. Today they are widespread around the globe thanks to commercial markets, but if you want them fresh they need cold and humid climate to grow. Remember at home always keep peas in a freezer to preserve their nutrients!  If you keep them in a room temperature they may spoil. Keep in mind to buy always fresh peas or at least buy them the same day you plan on cooking them so that you can take advantage of all their nutrients. Here are some boons of peas:


Protect the heart – Folic acid and B6 vitamin are beneficial for the heart and the circulatory system as well as the bones. That is not all: K vitamin regulates blood clots while the magnesium and calcium maintain the blood pressure. Dietary fibers are also part of the peas and they regulate cholesterol levels.

Improve vision – Peas can be of great help when it comes to vision problems. The concentrations of beta-carotenoids make them a good source of A vitamin. The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin which are found in abundance in peas protect all of the eye cells from oxidation and damages. Regular consumption prevents cataract and macular degeneration.

Keep the bones healthy – Peas have nutritive matters beneficial for the bones such as: K1 vitamin which activates the osteocalcin, the most important collagen protein in the bones, which helps during calcium deposition. Folic acid and B6 vitamin help in decreasing the levels of homocysteine which if decreased affects collagen and calcium deposition and this may lead to osteoporosis.

Boost energy levels – Peas have nutritive matters which are of the essence for all the cells and complex systems in our body which produce energy. B1, B2, B3 and B6 are necessary for processing carbohydrate, proteins and fats. Peas are also filled with iron which maintains normal function of blood cells and their creation.
