President Donald Trump, despised by reports that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called him a “moron” previously this year, said to Forbes in an interview published on Tuesday that he has a higher IQ than his secretary of state.
The remarks underlines the instability between the two men following several reports that their relationship has unraveled over the secretary of state’s remarks. Trump and Tillerson, along with Secretary of Defense James Mattis, are expected to have lunch together at the White House on Tuesday afternoon.
“I think it’s fake news, but if he did that, I guess we’ll have to compare IQ tests,” Trump said. “And I can tell you who is going to win.”
Trump knew prior to the report previously this month that Tillerson had referred to him as a “moron” at the Pentagon few months ago, a source that is aware of the discussion told CNN, but it’s uncertain if the president talked about the comment with Tillerson. Donald Trump was not there at the Pentagon meeting where the remarks was delivered.
The president and his administration have looked to disgrace the original NBC report, regardless of the fact that different outlets have since confirmed Tillerson made the comment.
“The @NBCNews story has just been totally refuted by Sec. Tillerson and @VP Pence. It is #FakeNews,” Trump wrote on Twitter at the time. “They should issue an apology to AMERICA!”
Tillerson also came forward with an in-person statement praising his boss and his commitment to working for him, but according to CNN sources, both of them have an troubled relationship that has lately been underlined by the fact that the president tweeted that Tillerson was “wasting his time trying to negotiate” with North Korea.
In an interview with Forbes, Trump said, “He was wasting his time. I’m not undermining him. I think I’m actually strengthening authority.”
